MATSUMOKU-ERA BRAND · JAPAN · LATER SAMICK KOREA

Vantage

Vantage arrived around the end of the 1970s with an unusually strong run of original Japanese guitars from Matsumoku. VS, VP, VA, VLP, X-Series and later performance models gave the brand a real identity before production shifted after Matsumoku closed. For Vantage, “Made in Japan” usually means one chapter; “Vantage” alone spans more than one.

OVERVIEW

What to know quickly

LAUNCH Vantage was developed for North American distribution around 1978–1979.
MIJ CORE Early electrics were largely Matsumoku-built and moved quickly into original designs.
LATER ERA After Matsumoku closed, Korean production—associated with Samick—continued the Vantage name.

The serial and country mark can transform the story. A 1981 Matsumoku VP/VA model should not be valued from a 1990s Korean hollow-body listing.

IDENTIFY YOUR GUITAR

Which Vantage do you have?

Vantage has one of the more useful enthusiast serial archives. Combine model family, serial format and country marking before assigning an era.

  1. Find the family prefix. VS, VP, VA, VLP, VE and X-Series codes organize much of the early catalog.
  2. Read the serial carefully. Many 1980–1984 Japanese electrics use year/month-readable formats.
  3. Confirm country of manufacture. Japan and Korea represent different production chapters.
  4. Check neck construction. Bolt-on, set-neck and neck-through models all existed.
  5. Do not use acoustic dating rules blindly. Vantage acoustics were sourced differently from the electric line.

SERIES & CURRENT RETAIL GUIDE

The Japanese years contain several strong original families

VS / VP / VA Witch, Mystic, Artist / Performer families Often $350–$800+ used Early original Matsumoku designs
VLP Spirit VLP 500/510/540/550 and related Often $300–$650 used LP-inspired early family
VE / X / Avenger Semi-hollow and 1980s performance models Often $300–$800+ used Later Japanese performance range
Korean / later Vantage 655, 670 and later models Often $200–$700 used Post-Matsumoku market

Vantage is primarily a used-market brand. Current Guitar Center listings span Japanese-era-style solidbodies, later hollow bodies, acoustics and classical guitars.

USED VALUE GUIDE

MIJ Vantage can punch above the logo recognition

Late-September 2026 dealer examples ranged from roughly $230 for later/lesser models to around $600–$700 for some solidbody and hollow-body examples. Exact Japanese Matsumoku models can vary more widely.

LATER / COMMON Often roughly $200–$450.
MIJ / BETTER MODEL Often about $400–$800+.
RARE / NECK-THROUGH Can move higher with exact model, condition and originality.
  1. Use the serial archive. Vantage dating is unusually helpful for many MIJ electrics.
  2. Confirm country. Later Korean instruments should not inherit Matsumoku pricing automatically.
  3. Inspect laminated necks. Neck-through and multi-piece construction is part of the appeal on higher models.
  4. Test active electronics. Some performance models use switching or active circuitry.
  5. Separate acoustics from electrics. Factories and dating systems differ.

Search the full model prefix plus “Vantage Matsumoku” only after country/serial evidence supports it. Later 655/670 hollow bodies belong to another chapter.

HISTORY & COMMENTARY

A North American brand built to show what Matsumoku could do

Vantage was developed around 1978 for North American distribution, with Matsumoku producing the key early electric guitars. By 1979 the line had moved beyond simple copies into its own natural-wood and performance designs.

Matsumoku’s 1987 closure ended the core Japanese chapter. Korean production followed, associated with Samick, and the brand continued into the 1990s. For buyers today, that makes country and serial data essential rather than optional trivia.
