Applause
Applause began as Ovation's more affordable line in the 1970s and still occupies that role today. Current Applause instruments include familiar Lyrachord Roundback acoustic-electrics as well as the newer Wood Classics series of traditionally shaped wood-body guitars. Do not assume every Applause is simply a lower-priced Ovation bowl guitar—the current catalog is broader than that.

OVERVIEW
What to know quickly
Applause is the value line—but not every Applause is the same construction. Identify whether the guitar is a Roundback, Wood Classics, older GTX electric or another discontinued model before pricing it.
IDENTIFY YOUR GUITAR
Which Applause do you have?
Applause has covered several kinds of instruments over decades. Current acoustic models use clear series/model codes, while older used examples may require headstock, label, bowl and electronics clues.
- Find the full model code. AB24, AE44, AEO-69, AAD96 and older AA / GTX designations point to very different instruments.
- Identify the body construction. Lyrachord Roundback, conventional wooden acoustic body and solidbody electric examples belong to separate parts of the brand history.
- Photograph the label and preamp. Interior labels, control panels and pickup systems can help place an acoustic-electric by era.
- Check bowl depth and soundhole style. Mid-depth, super-shallow, center-hole and multi-soundhole designs should not be compared as if identical.
- On older electrics, document everything. Used GTX solidbodies appear in the market and require model-specific research rather than Roundback assumptions.

USED VALUE GUIDE
Low new prices put a ceiling on ordinary used examples
Guitar Center showed about 31 used Applause guitars in late September 2026. Ordinary older Roundbacks commonly appeared around the low hundreds, while unusual solidbody GTX models and cleaner specialty instruments could sit higher.
- Compare the exact model against current Applause new pricing before calling a used example a bargain.
- Inspect the wooden top for cracks, bridge lift and distortion even when the back is composite.
- Test the preamp, pickup, battery compartment and output jack.
- Check neck angle and saddle height; high action can be structural, not merely a truss-rod adjustment.
- On discontinued solidbody or unusual models, use sold evidence instead of applying Roundback acoustic values.
CURRENT USED MARKET

Current Applause inventory mixes modern new models with decades of discontinued instruments. Use the model code and body type in every used-market search.
COMPARE
What else lives in this neighborhood?
Current Roundback Applause belongs beside other value acoustic-electrics, while Wood Classics competes with conventional beginner and step-up acoustics. The construction type should choose the comparison.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Before you buy—or price—one
- Roundback assumptions. The current Wood Classics series uses conventional wood acoustic bodies, not Lyrachord bowls.
- Electronics age. Older preamps and battery compartments can be a larger repair issue than the guitar's purchase price suggests.
- Top condition. Composite back construction does not protect the wooden soundboard from cracks, lift or distortion.
- Model-code shortcuts. AB, AE, AA, AEO and GTX labels can belong to very different eras and instrument types.
- Repair-to-value ratio. On inexpensive examples, fret, neck or electronics work can exceed the used value quickly.
HISTORY & COMMENTARY
Ovation's affordable sibling has become its own long-running used-market brand
Ovation's current brand history says Applause was launched in the 1970s to make Roundback advantages available at a lower price. The modern line still carries that role under the current Ovation brand family.
The interesting wrinkle is that Applause did not remain one single recipe. Vintage and used markets contain older Roundbacks, shallow bowls and even solidbody electrics, while the current catalog adds conventional Wood Classics acoustics. For a buyer, the Applause name gives useful family context—but the body construction and model code supply the evidence.
WHAT PLAYERS LIKE
Why a Applause can be worth picking up
- Affordable Roundback access. Traditional and Elite models preserve the distinctive bowl construction at lower prices than premium Ovation.
- Broad current acoustic choice. Wood Classics adds dreadnought, OM, slope-shoulder, travel, jumbo and bass formats.
- Stage electronics. Many current models include pickup/preamp systems rather than requiring an aftermarket installation.
- Distinctive ergonomics. Shallow and mid-depth bowls can feel very different from conventional square-backed acoustics.
- Used-market affordability. Many older examples remain inexpensive enough to be practical player guitars rather than collector-only pieces.
